Description

The recordings were made in the mid-1940s and were originally released under the name Bed on the Floor

the album follows the exodus of Midwesterners headed for California and mirrors both Guthrie’s own life and John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath

Above them was a song he had just written about the inequality he witnessed in his travels across the United States

” It was an attempt to restore the dignity of the anonymous lives whose unidentified remains were buried in an unmarked mass grave in California’s Central Valley

Guthrie was inspired to write songs that came directly out of this unlikely relationship
