Nehemiah Adams (1808 1878) was born in Salem, Massachusetts and was opposed to slavery by default. He did, however, feel that some of the abolitionists were exaggerating or sensationalizing what was happening in the south as a way of harnessing support for their cause, which he felt was unhelpful and unethical. He travels to the South to get a first hand view of what is happening. In a particularly poignant section where he
