Here, two design featuresold stone elements (spolia) and a chromatic master plan based on a reconstruction of the historical colours of the faadeswere used as prime evidence of historical authenticity in the debates that raged in the newspapers as the construction work proceeded. However, these design elements were in many cases read as pastiche,
